If you plan to visit the Fongshan area by taking the Kaohsiung Metro to Fongshan station, your first port of call should be the Fongyi Academy. Steeped in history and literature and situated within the old Qing Dynasty-era Fongshan City, Fongyi Academy was where young Qing Dynasty-era students went to receive an education. The academy also served as an examination hall and was the highest seat of learning in southern Taiwan at the time. Following a five-year-long restoration, the academy reopened to the public on Nov. 1, 2014. Visitors to the academy should first take a moment to admire the beautiful architecture. The academy is arranged around three interconnecting courtyards which house an entrance gate, lecture room and hall, while the left and right sides house student dormitories.

Chengcing Lake Baseball Stadium, located beside the scenic Chengcing Lake, is the most advanced and largest baseball stadium in Taiwan. In the 9th year of the Jiaqing reign (1804), Magistrate Wu Zhaolin built six city gates for Fengshan County, and the Small East Gate (Dongbian Gate) was one of them. After enduring the passage of time, Dongbian Gate is now the only remaining ancient gate of Fengshan City, giving it profound historical and symbolic significance. It is currently designated as a municipal historic site. Dongfu Bridge spans the East Gate Creek, known today as Fengshan Creek. Its boat-shaped piers have a history of nearly 200 years. These hexagonal bridge piers, designed with both ends shaped like a ship’s bow, were built during the Qing Dynasty and reflect traditional Chinese architectural styles. They are now unique in Taiwan and considered extremely precious.

this alley lies within the East Gate area of the old Fengshan City. During the Qing Dynasty, it was the main landing route for sailing ships traveling from mainland China to the new Fengshan City. Many blacksmiths from Tangshan settled here due to the heavy and cumbersome nature of blacksmith tools, choosing to live nearby rather than transport their equipment over long distances. This led to the formation of a blacksmith marketplace. From the Qing Dynasty through Taiwan’s early agricultural era, blacksmithing was in its golden age. A single large iron tool could support a family's daily expenses, and farming tools were in such high demand that orders had to be scheduled in advance — making it a highly valued profession.
